The world's second largest
sand island.
Straddie packs an extraordinary amount of nature into a relatively compact area — and unlike K'Gari, it's all within 45 minutes of Brisbane. Here's what's waiting when you get off the ferry.
Drive the full length of these iconic beach tracks on the eastern side of the island. Speed limit 60km/h on Main Beach, 40km/h on Flinders Beach. Best driven at low tide on the firm hard sand. Some of the best beach driving in South East Queensland.
Point Lookout is the most easterly point in Queensland. The North Gorge Headland Walk is an easy coastal stroll where dolphins, turtles, manta rays and migrating humpback whales (May–November) are regularly spotted from the clifftops.
A stunning freshwater lake tucked into the national park, reached by a 3km return walk from the nearest carpark. The clear water, paperbark-lined banks and total seclusion make this one of Straddie's most rewarding stops. Look for the rare golden swamp wallaby.
Brown Lake (Bummiera) is a peaceful tea-tree perched lake — perfect for a swim in calm, amber-tinted water. The Tripod Track is a sandy inland 4WD route through scrubbly gum forest that connects the beach to the western side of the island — a change of pace from beach driving.
Designated 4WD-accessible campsites on Main Beach and Flinders Beach — the best way to wake up on Straddie. Your national park permit covers vehicle access to the camping areas. Generators permitted on beach areas 7am–9pm. Book campsites separately through Minjerribah Camping.
Kangaroos and koalas roam the island's bushland. Dolphins, turtles, manta rays and dugongs are regularly seen from the water's edge. The island is also one of South East Queensland's best fishing destinations — tailor, whiting and flathead from the beach, and larger species further out.
Road rules, beach safety & the environment.
Beach driving on Straddie is on Main Beach and Flinders Beach only. The same road rules as the mainland apply at all times — including random breath testing from Queensland Police.
Maximum 60 km/h on Main Beach, 40 km/h on Flinders Beach. Standard Queensland road rules apply. Police conduct regular speed checks and random breath testing on the beaches.
Beach driving is not permitted 1 hour 15 minutes either side of high tide — for safety and environmental reasons. Always check tide charts before heading onto the beach. We provide tide info at collection.
Your national park permit must be displayed on the windscreen (bottom left) at all times. We arrange and display your permit before you leave Geebung. Authorised officers can request to see it.
4WD beach driving is permitted on Main Beach and Flinders Beach only. The Tripod Track inland does not require a permit. Stay on designated tracks at all times — driving off-track is an offence.
Turtles, shorebirds and nesting sites are present on the beaches. Keep a safe distance from all wildlife — and watch for kangaroos on inland tracks, especially at dawn and dusk.
Take all rubbish with you. This is a national park — leave it exactly as you found it. Fires on beach campsites are for cooking only and must be fully extinguished with water.
Important information.
Applies to both the Vehicle Hire Only and Camping Package options.

A refundable $5,000 security bond is required at collection. Processed as a credit card pre-authorisation — released in full after your hire.
